January - Australia Day and Australiana

Australia Day, 26 January, marks the landing of the First Fleet at Camp Cove in 1788 and since 1935 has been celebrated as Australia's national day.

The year 2010 is also the centenary of the opening of the Mitchell Library (as part of the State Library of New South Wales), endowed by David Scott Mitchell. Mitchell gifted his substantial collection of books, manuscripts, maps and pictures relating to Australia. For the first time, this enabled the public study of Australia itself.

2010 marks the 200-year anniversary of Matthew Flinders' first chart of the Australian coastline which he described as 'Continent Australia'. Today the urban renewal of Australia's maritime buildings as cultural spaces allows us to re-imagine and reflect upon these experiences.
