January - style and lifestyle

January offers us time to confront our rich historical landscape as well as the characteristics of our national identity, whether on a crowded or quiet beach, or in the silent but peopled landscapes of the interior.

These dictates of an outdoors lifestyle and a larrikin attitude have strongly influenced our national dress - from cabbage tree palm hats and Akubras to surf board shorts, as well as re-defining Australian women's trousers, and inventing the practical women's one-piece bathing costume and manufacturing the two-piece bikini.

Along with the adoption of Indigenous designs under licence and the borrowing of many migrant traditions, Australia's recognition of its historical landscape leaves us with a rich legacy in our arts, dress and identity.
